The Mental Secretary
The human mind has the remarkable ability to hold many thoughts & memories, as if in little filing cabinets; some cabinets contain bits & fragments of arithmetic that, let's face it- we were right- we'd never need again; other cabinets hold old friendships, lost loves, embarrassing moments, recipes, promises, prayers, & so on... we keep files of everything. So, if you're like me, you lock up those math cabinets, & those recipe cabinets, & for the most part, the lost love cabinet rarely gets opened, 'cause really, who cares? The great tragedy of humanity is that we keep the drawers of our inquity open, new files going in, & current files in constant review. We fling open the drawers of trust, but never to add files of trust gained, 'cause again, who cares? We fling them open bitterly to record instances of betrayal or disappointment, & we choose to open the drawer as often as possible to remind ourselves that we were wronged, & to justify our having a trust cabinet in the first place. For most of us, the bottoms of our self-love drawers have fallen out (either from buckling under the weight of one too many files, or from rot or rust due to never seeing any use), & all the files have scattered to the wind. As an office secretary, nothing is more essential to my peace of mind on the job than tidy filing cabinets. If it's old, throw it out. If it's no longer relevant, discard it. If it is of no good use to anyone, be done with it. So, this day, I'm going to start cleaning out my mental filing cabinets. I'm trashing the violations from the trust bin. I'm putting new bottoms on the drawers of my self-love cabinet; no one else can hold these files for me, afterall. So, clean up. Shred the unnecessary. Let go of the pain, resentment, & fear, & brush the dust off of the cabinets that hold all of your deepest hopes & dreams, & fill 'em up!
